Silicon Valley Unemployment Rate Reaches Another Record Low.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Dec. 20--Santa Clara County's unemployment rate tumbled again in November, to another modern-day record of 2.5 percent. That means that only one of every 40 county residents who wanted to work last month couldn't find a job.

Small month-to-month changes in the county's unemployment rate generally aren't statistically significant, because of the small number of people surveyed. But November's jobless rate was a big drop from October's 2.9 percent. It's an even bigger drop from the 3.3 percent jobless rate in November 1996.

And the long-term trends, which are more important, are just as favorable: The county's unemployment rate has been at or below 3.1 percent since March. It hasn't been as high as 4 percent since February...
