TCI Viewed as Winner for Drawing Software Rivals into Set-Top Box Deals.

Jan. 14--TCI Cablevision is getting its way -- and the company's triumphs could reshape how people use televisions and computers.
No doubt about it, industry analysts said Tuesday, Tele-Communications Inc. is on a roll. There may be no better example of the cable giant's winning streak than the deals TCI orchestrated for digital boxes to sit atop a TV set.
During the weekend, TCI crafted an agreement with Sun Microsystems Inc. to supply certain software for a new generation of cable boxes. TCI also hammered out a deal with Microsoft to provide the operating system for the set-top devices. The boxes will meld television and computer...
