New General Manager Aims to Bring the Shine Back to Cadillac.

DETROIT--Jan. 20--When John F. Smith changed jobs nearly a year ago, he went from one of General Motors Corp.'s lowest-profile divisions to one of its most visible.

Smith shifted from being president of Allison Transmission in Indianapolis, a maker of heavy-duty truck automatic transmissions, to general manager of Cadillac, GM's luxury-car division.

In the new job, Smith is racing the calendar. His task is to restore the shine to Caddy, once the premier luxury brand -- but one that hasn't kept up in attracting customers under the age of 60. The median age of Cadillac owners -- the midpoint between its oldest and youngest -- is 63 years old.
