May 1--In a deal that brings together two Pittsburgh-born startups to create a challenge to the one of the Internet's most successful companies, Lycos yesterday acquired WiseWire for almost $40 million in stock.
The purchase will allow Lycos, which operates a Web site that allows users to search and explore the World Wide Web, to better compete with Yahoo!, which operates a similar Web site that is more popular.
Lycos, which was founded three years ago and went public a year later, is worth $962 million at yesterday's closing price of $61.81 per share, up $6.12.
