May 7--Kern County farmer Greg Palla reached into a row of cut hay as it lay drying under Wednesday's warm morning sun.

Beneath the golden brown of its surface, the oat straw was damp and dank and beginning to darken -- still wet after pounding thundershowers soaked his fields on Saturday and again on Monday and Tuesday.

"It looks more like sauerkraut than hay," Palla said. "This is the perfect environment for the growth of mildew and mold."

If that happens, the hay could become almost worthless. Even now, the chances of generating a premium price for the livestock feed decreases each day the straw is allowed to ferment, its odors changing from a fresh wholesome scent to something resembling sweaty socks....
