MIAMI--Jul. 13--In 1983, two young Cuban entrepreneurs took a risk with a company that makes electronic clocks.
At that time, there was only one Hispanic-owned company on the U.S. market -- Miami-based Suave Shoe Corp. However, Cosmo Communications Corp. decided to try Suave's path to Wall Street.
To do so, it hired Miami-based law firm Greenberg Traurig, which Suave had used for legal advice. The firm offered Cosmo the services of attorney Cesar Alvarez. The two Cuban clock sellers, Amancio Suarez and Joel Newman, ended up with a successful entrance to the New York Stock Exchange.
