Jul. 20--Frank Tanimoto will sell no wine before its time -- or until customers make their way from the diaper section to the liquor department.
"People are surprised to see me here," said the full-time wine steward at the new Ralphs grocery store in Laguna Niguel.
Wearing a crisp white shirt, tie and store-issued green vest, Tanimoto roams the aisles to advise shoppers on which of Ralphs' 130 varieties of chardonnay, merlot, Chablis and cabernet would go best with their Cheese Nips.
"Customers love it," store manager Al Horacek said. "The second day we were open, sales were down (from opening day) in every department except liquor."
