Jul. 16--American Airlines' parent is on its way to surpassing $1 billion this year.

AMR Corp., parent of American Airlines, yesterday led off what is expected to be a parade of record quarterly profits by announcing that it made more money in the second quarter than any airline company has ever made in any quarter.

The Fort Worth-based company said it earned $409 million, or $2.30 a share, up 35 percent from the $302 million, or $1.63 a share, it earned a year ago. The per-share profit exceeded by a nickel the average estimate of Wall Street analysts surveyed by First Call Corp.
