Aug. 18--SPRINGFIELD, Mo.--It was in this Ozark college town 440 miles from Grapevine, Texas that the idea dawned on Trent Petty to rename Bethel Road off Interstate 635 Bass Pro Drive.

In February 1994, Mr. Petty was on a fishing expedition: hHe wanted to catch Missouri's biggest tourist attraction, a store called Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, and persuade a polite but determined owner, Johnny L. Morris, that Irving wasn't where he wanted his store to be.

Mr. Morris, who started out 25 years ago selling lures in his father's liquor store, was sure the best spot for his sprawling fishing, hunting, boating and camping store was at I-635 and MacArthur Boulevard in Irving. It was to be the size of six football...
