Sep. 22--Sulzer Intermedics, a maker of pacemakers that is the single largest employer in Angleton, has been sold to Guidant, a competitor based in Indianapolis, for from $775 million to $850 million.
The operation in Brazoria County is the biggest part of an operation sold by Sulzer Medica, a Swiss company that wanted to get out of this business, in which it was one of the smaller players.
It put the pacemaker division on the market in June. The sale also includes two smaller Sulzer operations, one in Florida and one in Germany, in addition to Intermedics in Angleton.
