Denver-Based MediaOne Spends $50 Million on Cable Internet Access System.

Oct. 12--MediaOne Group Inc. -- the largest provider of cable in the Coachella Valley, with 60 percent of the market -- is spending $50 million on its system in the desert region so it can give customers Internet service that is 50 and 100 times faster than the traditional modems which transmit and receive 56 kilobytes per second.

MediaOne officials believe cable Internet will be an instant success when it comes on line sometime next year.

"I think it will be an easy sell," said Bob Rubery, director of system operations for MediaOne. "We get calls everyday and have 2,000 names on our waiting (list)."
