Oct. 10--WASHINGTON--Republicans are pitted against other Republicans -- and the White House -- as high-stakes negotiations over an agricultural guest worker program enter their final hours.

Whether the controversial guest worker provision survives as Congress works to finish its final spending bill of the year may depend on how vigorously the White House fights the provision sought by California growers.

Though the guest worker plan is still a work in progress, the basic idea is to establish a United States registry of potential farm workers.

Growers who couldn't get help from the registry could import temporary foreign workers.
