Compaq Adds Features to Alta Vista to Improve Internet Searches.

Oct. 13--For now, Alta Vista is sticking with its roots as a powerful Internet search engine.

Compaq Computer Corp., which acquired Alta Vista when it bought Digital Equipment Corp. in June, plans to announce today new features designed to make it easier for PC users to get around the Internet.

One new feature, called "Ask Alta Vista," allows users to phrase simple questions, such as "Who has the cheapest air fare to Hawaii?"

That question will return pages of travel agencies and ticket sellers.

Compaq said Alta Vista also recognizes common phrases or word combinations such as "New York," so searches don't return possible cites for just one of the words.
