Oct. 13--CHRYSLER REPORTS THIRD-QUARTER RECORD: Chrysler Corp. is heading into next month's planned merger with Germany's Daimler-Benz AG richer and more profitable than even Wall Street's optimists expected. The automaker set a third-quarter earnings record and entered its final weeks as an independent U.S. company with a $9.6 billion cash reserve, which should ease any fears across the Atlantic about its financial strength. Chrysler yesterday credited strong sales of profitable new models, cost-cutting and the smooth launch of the redesigned 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee as reasons for its 55 percent increase in third-quarter earnings. Earnings totaled $682 million, or $1.02 a share, for the three months that ended Sept. 30....
