Federal Data On Commuter Trends Encourages Georgia to Try Rail.

Oct. 16--WASHINGTON--In an awkward, fragmented way, Americans are rediscovering the joys of short-distance rail travel.

In almost every urbanized corner of the United States, work is under way to some degree to provide commuter service on old passenger rail lines and thereby link workers with well-paying jobs.

Georgia is no exception, with commuter lines proposed to link Macon, Bremen and Chattanooga all to Atlanta.

But the national picture on short distance rail lines provides both discouraging and encouraging precedents for the proposed line from Macon to Atlanta, via Griffin.

Federal money for commuter lines, such as the one planned for the Griffin to Atlanta segment, is tough to find....
