Oct. 22--Although tapped to lead the nation's biggest bank, David Coulter was a man on the defensive after his first doses of NationsBank's warlike culture.
But almost from that day in April when his bank, BankAmerica, agreed to merge with Charlotte's NationsBank, Coulter never had a chance.
That was the assessment of people inside both banks and on Wall Street. Coulter, 51, said Tuesday he would resign Oct. 30 -- just 30 days after NationsBank and BankAmerica completed the merger.
Coulter may have been the last to know. Despite many ups and downs in his first months with his marriage partner, he continued to view himself through this summer as a real contender for the top job, say people close to...
