Oct. 21--A group of current and former Tom Thumb employees has filed a class-action lawsuit against the supermarket chain saying Tom Thumb has discriminated against African-American employees and applicants in its stores.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in the U.S. District Court in Dallas, claims that Tom Thumb and Simon David stores restrict promotions for African-American employees, particularly to upper-level management positions, and fails to pay those employees the same wages as others.

Mark Prestidge, president of Tom Thumb, declined to comment Tuesday, saying through a spokeswoman that he "has no knowledge of the lawsuit."
