Chicago-Based Engine Maker May Use Indianapolis Plant for New Product.

Oct. 22--The head of Navistar International Corp. said Wednesday the company's Indianapolis engine plant "will definitely get a serious look" as the production site for a new product line.

"I've seen plant management and the union work hard to show that they can earn it," said John Horne, chairman, president and chief executive of Chicago-based Navistar.

The Indianapolis plant employs 1,700. It makes a V8 diesel engine for Ford Motor Co. Ford is finalizing discussions to also buy V6 diesels, which would expand the number of Ford models equipped with Navistar-built engines.

"I'll be disappointed if they don't show they can earn it," Horne said of the new product line.
