SBA, IRS Warn Companies of Y2K Bug Problems, Solutions.

Oct. 27--The Internal Revenue Service and the Small Business Administration have joined forces to send letters to 6.5 million U.S. companies about the Year 2000 computer problem, IRS Commissioner Charles Rossotti and SBA Administrator Aida Alvarez said.

The notice will provide a basic description of the problem and how companies can fix it. If not reprogrammed, computers and electronic devices that store years with two digits will malfunction on or shortly before Jan. 1, 2000, mistaking the date for New Year's Day 1900.

The notice to companies will be posted in the next edition of the SSA/RS Reporter, a periodical sent to U.S. firms by the IRS and U.S. Social Security Administration. As part of National Y2K...
