Oct. 26--INDUSTRY CAN'T PUSH PROMOTE-U.S. PLAN: Despite sending some of its biggest names to lobby Congress, the tourism industry was unable to persuade lawmakers to fork over money to advertise the United States abroad.
The House and Senate closed shop for the year last week without approving long-term federal spending for a program to pitch the nation as a travel destination.
"This is a major lost opportunity for the U.S. economy and for Americans everywhere," said Roger Ballou, chairman of the U.S. National Tourism Organization, which led the effort to get federal funds.
