New Ford Executive Speaks to Akron, Ohio, Students about Labor Relations.

Nov. 3--Peter J. Pestillo has calmed the savage beast.

Speaking to University of Akron business students Monday, Ford Motor Co.'s newly named vice chairman -- and former B.F. Goodrich executive in Akron -- said that respect and cooperation, not conflict and mistrust, are what turns the union animal into a friend and ally of management.

He ought to know: Ford, the nation's second-largest automaker, has not had a major labor stoppage for 12 years.

"The next great barrier to American excellence is our inability to deal with people," said Pestillo, 60. "How you deal with people determines how successful you are... . Part of the reason that Akron no longer makes tires is because (company managers)...
