British Statistics Office Delays Release of Average Earnings Numbers.

Nov. 2--The Office for National Statistics has succumbed to Treasury and Bank of England bullying and agreed not to publish average earnings data until confidence is restored in the statistics.

Given the fuss surrounding the data, the ONS is probably right. The Bank should not be allowed to escape scot-free, however. More than 70 years have passed since Disraeli first coined the phrase: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics."

Call it data or call it statistics -- over-reliance on changes in average earnings growth hardly seems sensible, even after the series receives a clean bill of health.
