Nov. 15 -- Across America, some 8 million people will get mortgage loans this year, and the majority will pay too much, says Randy Johnson, author of "Save Thousands of Dollars on Your Home Mortgage" (John Wiley & Sons, $14.95, 274 pages).
Mostly, that's because people don't deal enough with the mortgage-lending industry to gain more than a passing familiarity, he notes. "We're all dummies outside our fields," he says.
Johnson is president of Independence Mortgage Co., a fixture in Newport Beach for 19 years. Over the years, he figures he has made loans to 2,200 people, about a half-billion dollars in all.
