Dec. 3 -- The Bebop Lounge has thick tan carpeting, plastic plants in Oriental vases and a mammoth wide-screen TV.

Music fans would be disappointed. No jazz joint, it is a tiny room in the warren that is AT&T's operational headquarters in Basking Ridge. Once a formal greeting place for foreign visitors, the space is now being used to bridge a different kind of gulf: skepticism about the company's embrace of cable wires to deliver phone calls and high-speed Internet access.

AT&T, which plans to employ the technology on a mass-scale once its merger with cable giant Tele-Communications Inc. is approved, has been shepherding analysts and other industry observers through for demonstrations this fall.
