Britain's Vodafone to Join in Bidding for AirTouch Communications.

Jan. 5 -- Vodafone is poised for an audacious move on American giant AirTouch that would see the British mobile phones company take on the international businesses of the West Coast cellular operator, analysts believe.

Fast-growing Vodafone is said to be ready to join forces with Bell Atlantic, which is in the throes of $45 billion (UKpound 27 billion) merger talks with AirTouch.

Vodafone and AirTouch held tentative merger talks themselves last year and the two are seen as ideal industry partners. In Europe they are members of rival bidding consortia for mobile phone licences. AirTouch also has attractive Asian operations.
