Jan. 7 -- The megabuck battle is on for AirTouch Communications.
Britain's Vodafone Group confirmed yesterday it's upping the ante on Bell Atlantic's earlier merger approach for wireless telecom giant AirTouch.
Bell Atlantic and AirTouch had been negotiating throughout the weekend over the Baby Bell's $45 billion buyout offer.
But Vodafone would pay more -- perhaps as much as $52 billion -- analysts said.
The battle for AirTouch -- a giant in the industry that has little name recognition -- is the latest sign of just how cut-throat the battle for cellular customers here and abroad has become.
