Jan. 6 -- Someone who often slips into the red should choose a bank with low overdraft charges. If you always remain within an agreed limit, you will be affected only by authorised overdraft fees.
But if you occasionally tip over this limit, you should also check unauthorised overdraft charges.
These kick in once you exceed your bank's buffer zone, which is typically UKpound 50 or UKpound 100.
Both sets of overdraft charges vary enormously between banks.
For example, someone who doesn't have an arranged overdraft but accidentally goes overdrawn above the buffer zone for a week, first by UKpound 50, then three days later by another UKpound 20, is charged a total of UKpound 55.34 by Royal...
