Republic Industries to Buy Two San Jose, Calif.-Area Auto Dealerships.

Jan. 8 -- Two of the biggest names among Silicon Valley auto dealers -- Lucas and Smythe -- are selling some of their franchises, further evidence that the era of the family-run car business is fading away.

Smythe European, a Mercedes-Benz dealership, and Smythe Volvo, both on Stevens Creek Boulevard, have been sold to Republic Industries, the Wayne Huizenga-owned, Florida-based conglomerate that also runs the AutoNation U.S.A. used-car super-store chain and some rental car companies.

The sales must get routine approval from the manufacturers. Republic expects to take ownership by the end of March.
