Washington, D.C.-Area Electric Companies Work to Restore Power.

Jan. 19 -- The region's electric companies are still battling to restore power in some communities four days after the first major winter storm of 1999 slammed the Washington area.

But Potomac Electric Power Co., Virginia Power and Baltimore Gas and Electric said they were well prepared to handle the regionwide power outages that left some 700,000 customers without power by early Friday morning.

All three power companies said their insurance and reserve funds will cover the costs of repairs such as fixing power lines and repairing substations. They said consumer electricity rates are not affected by storms.
