Former Chairman of Woolf Brothers of Kansas City, Mo., Dies.

Jan. 21 -- Alfred Lighton, the former chairman of Woolf Brothers Inc. who was also known for his involvement in civic activities, died Wednesday of cancer. He was 81.

Those close to Lighton knew him as an individualist, a gentleman and an avid horseman who joined the U.S. Army's horse cavalry shortly before it was disbanded in World War II.

But his public identity was inextricably connected with Woolf Brothers, an upscale Kansas City clothier that traced its roots to 1865 and once outfitted such Western legends as Buffalo Bill Cody and Bat Masterson.

Lighton joined Woolf Brothers, which was founded by his grandfather and uncle, in 1937. He became a director in 1945 and vice president in 1953. He...
