Botetourt County, Va., Plant Plans $5 Million Expansion.

Jan. 20 -- Officials of an Alabama steel company, in announcing a $5 million expansion at its Botetourt County welding facility, said Tuesday that their biggest need now is for skilled laborers.

Max DeJonge, president of O'Neal Steel Inc. of Birmingham, said the company's growth in the Roanoke Valley depends on its ability to recruit skilled laborers such as machinists, fitters and welders.

The company has 125 Botetourt County workers, but Ron Self, district manager for Roanoke, said it has immediate openings for at least another three machinists and 10 fitters and welders. Employees at the Cloverdale plant earn between $8 and $17 an hour.
