Nortel Gets Deal for Phone Network in Mexico.

Feb. 2 -- In its biggest contract yet in Latin America, Nortel Networks on Monday announced a $400 million-plus deal to supply a new nationwide network in Mexico that will offer local phone service and compete against giant TelMex.
The contract is a victory for the Canada-based telecommunications equipment maker, which beat out such rivals as Lucent Technologies. Nortel runs its Caribbean and Latin American headquarters from Sunrise, employing 900 people there and thousands more in the Latin region, including Mexico.
Nortel will supply AXTel, a Mexican phone company formerly known as Telinor and based in Monterrey in northern Mexico. Its initial three-year contract should top $400 million, while growth...
