Feb. 6 -- The first of six unions involved in a 3 1/2-year-long labor dispute with Detroit's two big daily papers has reached a tentative agreement on a new contract.
The deal was announced Friday and could lead to a settlement between the International Typographical Union and Detroit Newspapers, the company that prints and distributes the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News.
It is the most significant sign of progress in the often bitter battle over wages, work rules and alleged labor law violations since the six unions began a 19-month strike on July 13, 1995 -- a walkout that did not result in new contracts for more than 2,500 workers.
