Feb. 10 -- UKPOUND 11 BILLION MERGER TALK MAKES NP SIZZLE: Rumours of an UKpound 11 billion utility merger swept dealing rooms just before the close. Britain's second largest electricity supplier, National Power, sparked 8 pence higher to 500 pence and NorthWest Water and Norweb owner United Utilities 13 1/2 pence to 803 pence as buyers switched on to hot gossip that the two are locked in advanced merger talks.
National Power shocked supporters in December by putting its 4,000 megawatt Drax power station up for sale as part of a deal with the Government after bidding UKpound 180 million for the supply business of Midlands Electricity.
NP is said to have found a buyer (Vivendi of France or Centrica?)...
