Feb. 27 -- What's in a name? A whole lot of trouble if someone hijacks it, as Trimedyne Inc. learned Friday.

The Nasdaq exchange halted trading of the company's shares Friday in the wake of a clerical mishap and the actions of an unscrupulous corporate name-raider, according to the firm's chief financial officer, Shane Traveller.

A Nasdaq official said the stock exchange is seeking "additional information" from the Irvine-based maker of surgical lasers before trading can resume.

Traveller was less restrained: "We're the victims of blackmail," he said.

Trimedyne's debacle began -- unknown to it -- in early 1998, when the Nevada Secretary of State's office sent the firm a routine request...
