States Try to Lure Commercial Rocket Launch Site.

Mar. 25 -- It's the Saturn plant of the '90s.

Communities in 14 states are opening up their economic development checkbooks in hopes to providing one of two launch sites for a new commercial rocket being developed in California by Lockheed Martin Corp.

Dubbed VentureStar, it will be the commercial version of a new reusable launch system being developed for NASA.

Lockheed Martin won the competition for NASA funding last year against what was then McDonnell Douglas's Delta Clipper. The idea was to find a way to launch low-orbit satellites without sacrificing the rocket each time or dropping boosters into the sea as the Space Shuttle does.
