Intel Launches Home Networking System.

Apr. 12 -- For Intel Corp.'s networking group in Hillsboro, entering the home market is an investment in time and resources that rivals the launch of Pentium III, said Vice President Mark Christensen.

Coming up with the technology to link computers over existing telephone wires was a relative cinch.

Making it easy to use and install was the hard part.

Intel is convinced its investment in the AnyPoint Home Network, which hit store shelves Tuesday, will pay off in time.

By the chip-maker's own accounting, home networking could evolve into a $1 billion market in the next several years.
