Apr. 19 -- Despite its promise, the World Wide Web remains a garbled new medium of sites devoted to every imaginable topic, from macaroni to midwifery.

To sort through the clutter, search services are trying to do more than list every reference available on a given subject. Compaq Computer Corp.'s AltaVista recently said it will give more prominent display to sites that pay it advertising fees; Wellesley-based Direct Hit ranks sites based on the user's demographic profile. Other recent entries into the field like MiningCo.com pay squads of freelance editors to lead searchers to the information they seek.

Today, Waltham-based Lycos Inc. plans to become the first major search service to turn the ranking...
