Founder of North Carolina's Piedmont Airlines Dies.

Apr. 23 -- Tom Davis, who turned a Winston-Salem company that trained military pilots into one of the nation's best-run and most respected airlines, died Thursday.

Piedmont Airlines, which Davis created in 1948 three miles from the house where he was born, was the dominant airline of the Carolinas for 39 years.

Davis, who was 81, was renowned as one of the most successful businessmen in N.C. history. He oversaw the 1981 creation of the airline's Charlotte hub -- which was largely responsible for the city's emergence as a thriving business capital.
