Apr. 27 -- The future of personal computing is all about pockets.

The desktop, long the center of the personal computing universe, is about to become a has-been, courtesy of the pockets in your jacket, your pants and elsewhere.

Such is the prophecy of Bill Joy, the one-man idea factory behind most of Sun Microsystems' most innovative technologies.

As Joy and many industry observers see it, personal computing is moving rapidly away from the complex PC in favor of easy-to-use personal devices such as screen phones, Web-enabled set-top boxes and personal digital assistants. And playing a key role in that shift is Joy's latest brainchild: Jini.
