May 17 -- THE PRICE OF STRATEGY: Sprint Corp. and BellSouth Corp. will charge significantly more than Time Warner Communications Inc. for high-speed computer modems when the companies introduce the technology in Central Florida this summer. Why? Because they don't want to undercut their lucrative business in T1 lines, which hook corporate computer networks to the Internet. The new high-speed phone modems are nearly as fast as T1 lines, which cost thousands of dollars annually. The phone companies fear many businesses will yank their T1 lines if the new modems are priced too cheaply.
