May 17 -- STATE'S HMOS STILL LOST MONEY LAST YEAR -- JUST NOT AS MUCH: Florida's HMOs continued to lose money in 1998, but they still did better than the year before.
Together, the health-maintenance organizations lost an estimated $47.4 million.
That's a considerable improvement from the previous year, when the health plans lost $67.2 million.
The last profitable year was 1996, when HMOs made $45.3 million.
Last year's estimate is based on the quarterly reports each HMO filed with the state. Fourth-quarter data weren't released until recently.
The actual loss could be greater. HMOs usually revise their numbers before submitting their year-end reports to the Insurance Department....
