Alaska Airlines' Success Depends on Good Labor Relations, CEO Says.

May 19 -- SEATTLE -- John F. Kelly, Alaska Airlines chief executive officer, said Tuesday the airline's future success depends on finding ways to win labor peace with the company's unionized employees.
Speaking at a press conference before the company's annual shareholders meeting, Kelly said Alaska's "No. 1 goal" for the year is to conclude contract negotiations with four of its six major bargaining units.
The airline has been forced to cancel more than 600 flights in the past four weeks -- double the normal rate -- and company officials have blamed the cancellations on a "sickout" by customer service representatives and a work slowdown by mechanics.
