May 23 -- Last week, the Feds shut down a company that used E-mail to dupe people into making costly international telephone calls to ward off bills for merchandise they never ordered.

The Securities and Exchange Commission went after people trying to use the Internet to sell unregistered government of Vietnam bonds and prime bank securities and to raise money to build prefab hospitals in Turkey and franchises for Web site software.

Promoters fill electronic mailboxes with promises of six-figure incomes for little or no work.

Technology is wonderful, but it has given scam artists a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week opportunity to cheat you out of your money.
