Intel, Motorola Pave Way for Larger Silicon Wafers.

Jun. 10 -- The semiconductor industry's move to 12-inch silicon wafers got a big boost Wednesday as two major manufacturers announced progress in switching from 8-inch wafers to the larger size.
MEMC Electronic Materials Inc., based in O'Fallon, Mo., expects to benefit from increased use of the larger wafers.
Intel Corp., the world's largest computer-chip maker, announced it would begin making its chips on 12-inch (300 millimeter) wafers by 2002.
Motorola Inc. announced that its joint venture with Infineon Technologies (formerly Siemens Semiconductors) of Germany had achieved a breakthrough in developing manufacturing technology for the larger wafers. Motorola said that yields in its tests now...
