Fairmont, W.Va., May Become New Home of Identification Technology.

Jun. 15 -- FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Home of pepperoni rolls and Mary Lou Retton, Fairmont may soon have another claim to fame. But that will depend on the National Science Foundation.

The foundation is now considering a 22-page proposal to make West Virginia the National Center for Identification Technology.

The West Virginia High Technology Consortium in Fairmont began researching national designation for the state three years ago, based on emerging fingerprint-reading technology at the FBI in Clarksburg, and forensic research at West Virginia University and Marshall University.

If approved, the NSF would give $70,000 a year for five years to the state center. The purpose of the money is to foster...
