Air Technician Union Accuses FAA of Lags in Safety Equipment Replacement.

Jul. 1 -- TACOMA, Wash. -- The union that is installing new computers for the nation's air traffic control system said Wednesday the Federal Aviation Administration is falling further behind as it struggles to replace aging safety equipment.

The U.S. General Accounting Office, the congressional agency which serves as a watchdog on federal projects, said in April the old system "is prone to failures," requires "extensive maintenance" and has capacity constraints that "restrict the agency from making required safety and efficiency enhancements."

The union accusation came eight weeks after the FAA delayed plans to start installing the new computers in the nation's major airports.
