Jul. 1 -- MORRO BAY, Calif. -- It's a short ride to work, but one few people would ever want to attempt.
"They're absolutely fearless," Morro Bay businessman Dan Reddell said of the workers who've been stringing fiber optic cable between Pacific Gas and Electric's transmission towers.
He and other residents have stopped their daily routines to gawk as helicopters have shuttled workers from staging areas in pastures and fields to the tops of the transmission towers.
The ride is so short that workers don't even bother to get inside.
Instead, they sit on the chopper's landing skids and, as the helicopter hovers within inches of the power lines, calmly step onto the narrow steel girders -- 50...
