Online Trading Boom Raises Concerns on Wall Street.

Jul. 4 -- Kurt Vogel watched his stock investments jump 60 percent last year.

Not a bad return for a fellow who did it all with his eyes and fingertips. "I'm doing very well," he says.

Vogel, a salesman from St. Charles, invests solo through his computer with an online broker. He snatches stock research off the Internet, and cruises the online chat rooms where investors trade tips.

He's certainly not alone.

Online trading is exploding. Estimates are shaky, but the guessing is that roughly 3.5 million people are trading stocks online these days. That's up from just half a million in 1996.
