Jul. 30 -- The first independent consumer survey of electric utilities by market researcher J.D. Power and Associates found that some of Florida's largest power companies have much room to improve.
Florida Power Corp. in St. Petersburg, which serves 1.3-million customers in west-central Florida, ranked below the industry average in "customer satisfaction."
Tampa Electric Co. and Florida Power & Light Co. in south Florida fared better in the nationwide poll but still trailed utilities in neighboring southern states. In fact, all three are looking up at one of Florida's municipal power companies, Jacksonville Electric Authority.
